Abstract

Broadening biochar usage: Product Form for industrial and agricultural applications

For many agricultural applications, a biochar material with a larger particle size, lower carbon content and higher moisture level will suffice.  Looking to broader markets, making biochar powders as fine as 5 microns (D50) with higher carbon content and lower moisture can enable displacement of competitive petroleum based materials.  Reinforcement, or strength properties, as well as tint, or pigment strength are known to  correlated with particle size.  By developing technology to grind our biochar to as fine as 5 microns (D50) or smaller, markets for biochar can be opened up in the future.

This presentation will show the impact of particle size on reinforcing properties in polymer systems as well as the impact of particle size on pigmentation performance.  Powdered biochar can also aid in dispersions of biochar for aqueous agricultural applications.
