Producing Biochar from Scope 1 Feedstocks

Abstract

To help organizations meet their Scope 1 GHG obligations a sustainable end of life is needed for many feedstocks that typically end up in the landfill or waterways. A few corporations realize that funding Scope 3 projects are not providing value to their stakeholder, customers and producers. These organizations are investing in Scope 1 CDR projects. We believe that Scope 1 carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects will provide a class of higher value credits than what we are seeing in the market today.

Producing biochar from Scope 1 feedstocks can be challenging due to the high moisture, inorganic materials, collection, drying and preprocessing requirements. The Biomass Controls Biogenic Refinery is processing manure, food waste, biosolids, diapers, menstrual products, filtration media and algae for clients in North America, South Africa and India. As the carbonization of Scope 1 feedstocks becomes more mainstream the need for remote monitoring, operational reporting, scalability and high availability is being required as the market matures.
