The debate about biochar’s durability has taken on increased intensity in recent years with some carbon removal buyers focused on a minimum of 1,000 year permanence. Yet the need for short term carbon removal (i.e. decades to centuries) is equally urgent to allow time for other longer term carbon removal technologies to mature and scale cost-effectively.

Science has shown that a given portion of the carbon in biochar is labile while the rest is longer lasting. A novel method of measuring these different fractions has been developed and an innovative new approach to monitoring and monetizing both fractions has been going through real-world beta testing. This ‘Climate Cooling Services’ methodology will allow individuals or companies to affordably compensate their emissions using the shorter term carbon fraction while those companies committed to supporting longer term durability carbon sequestration can continue to purchase the higher cost CO2 removal portion.

This presentation will provide an overview of this new carbon removal offering.
