From August 22-25, 2016, over 300 biochar producers, researchers, users, and enthusiasts met at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon for the US Biochar Initiative 2016 Symposium: The Synergy of Science and Industry.
Hosted by Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, the conference featured 4 concurrent sessions with over 80 presentations in the following topic areas:
On August 22, two pre-conference workshops, presented by David Yarrow and Mike “The Worrm Guy” Flynn, introduced practical biochar applications. The conference began with an interactive plenary session that featured two keynote speakers: Jim Amonette of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Jen Kucera of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Following the keynote talks, conference attendees were asked to discuss some burning questions regarding the best way to move the biochar industry forward. The results of those discussions were presented during the plenary on the second day of the conference.
In addition to the concurrent sessions, the conference also included biochar production displays, a poster session, and many social and networking opportunities, including a bar-b-que dinner. The conference ended with an optional field tour of Corvallis area biochar projects and facilities.
