Building the Future from the Ground Up

Biochar and Livestock

Biochar has many uses, including in the production of livestock. The Nebraska Forest Service and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Department of Animal Science have teamed up on two projects to investigate those uses. Biochar is being fed to cattle and is being used in feedlot pens at the UNL Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center. Biochar is made from local woody materials such as Eastern Red Cedar. In this video, you'll also learn about plans for future research on biochar in cattle feed that looks at variables such as biochar characteristics and interactions with different cattle feed diets and supplements.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Biochar is not recognized in the US as an approved animal feed material by AAFCO. Biochar producers are encouraged to proceed cautiously and seek qualified legal advice before considering selling any biochar or biochar amended product as feed.
