Climate and Carbon - Oral Presentation
The next generation of biochar quality and carbon removal standards

The debate about biochar and its nature is more important than ever. Nowadays, the focus of this debate is often on the tracking of the product and its quality is neglected. However, history shows that unawareness or incorrect information can be ruinous for entire sectors. With the combination of the World Biochar Certificate (WBC) and the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard, a new generation of quality standards is entering the international carbon market and stands for transparency and traceability.

This presentation will provide an overview from cradle to grave - from good biochar quality production to high quality carbon sinks and their potential in the market.

Some more information about

a) World Biochar Certificate (WBC) - EBC for the globe

Industrial production of biochar goes far beyond the borders and is also becoming increasingly important for the US.  The World Biochar Certificate (WBC) guidelines were developed for covering the local requrements of the producers, agriculture and industrie. WBC includes quality requirements that are scientifically based.

b) Global Biochar C-Sink

With the new Global Biochar C-Sink Guidelines Carbon Standards represents a important step towards the sustainable establishment of planetary carbon sinks. Global Biochar C-Sink follows EBC C-Sink, the first system to provide a method of certifying the carbon sink potential of biochar, published in 2021.  The new standard will be published by Carbon Standards in January 2024 and can be presented on the conference for the first time.
